A few years ago, I found myself standing in front of a painting in a museum.
I don’t remember how long I stood there. A minute, maybe ten. What I do remember is becoming curious.
Who painted this?
What was their life like?
Why did they choose these colours?
And how has this painting survived centuries, wars, travels, and changing tastes to end up in front of me today?
The small information card beside the painting gave me the basics, but it left me wanting more.
Since then, every museum visit has begun the same way. I stop, I wonder, and before I know it, I’m completely absorbed in the story behind the painting. The more I learn, the more I notice. Tiny details I would have walked straight past suddenly become the most fascinating part of the artwork.
That’s how Beyond the Painting began.
I wanted to share that feeling of curiosity with others.
Not everyone has the chance to wander through museums around the world or spend hours researching artists, but I believe everyone can experience the joy of discovering the stories hidden within great works of art.
Every month, I’ll choose one painting that has captured my attention and follow my curiosity wherever it leads. I’ll learn about the artist, uncover the history surrounding the painting, look for the hidden details, and discover the stories that have allowed it to survive through the centuries.
Then I’ll gather what I have uncovered into a personal letter and a carefully curated collection of paper keepsakes, and send it straight to your mailbox.

My hope is that, over time, you’ll build a collection of letters, postcards, bookmarks, artist cards, and stickers. More importantly, I hope you’ll discover artists you’ve never heard of, uncover stories that have been waiting centuries to be told, and find paintings that become personal favourites.
Beyond the Painting isn’t limited to one style, period, or movement. Some months we’ll explore world-famous paintings hanging in renowned museums. Other months we’ll uncover lesser-known treasures with stories just as captivating. From portraits and landscapes to still lifes, seascapes, and colourful modern works, every month will bring a new painting to discover.
